If you do a local search for a business, you will notice that the search results will usually show a map of the city, and then 10 listings, usually A through J.

Even if you are just your average local small business in Nashville, you can usually get ranked on page one of the local business listings.

This is becoming more and more important in online marketing. So your friends at Marketing Nashville are here to help you learn how to do this yourself!

Marketing Nashville - 5 Steps to Local Optimization

1. Find which keywords get the most traffic. (You want to use targeted keywords that are directly relevant to your business.) Use this tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

2. Use the highest traffic keywords in the main title of your Google Local listing. If your best keywords are “Dentist Nashville” then use that as your title instead of your business name. Sometimes it’s ok to include your business name after the main “keyword” title, but only if it makes sense and isn’t too long.

3. Fill out every detail in your Google Local account. Include your hours, payments accepted, photos, video, coupon (make one up if you don’t have one). Leave no category blank.

4. Use your main keyword for your first business category. You are allowed five categories. Use other relevant keywords to fill out the other four categories. Use all five!

5. Get reviews. The key is to get multiple reviews trickling in over time. Simply ask your best customers if they would mind doing a review on Google for you. Then send them a link to your company Google profile and they can do a review. The best time to ask is when you’ve received a compliment or thanks. Most good customers are happy to do this. All they need is a Google account, and they can remain anonymous if they wish.

That’s it!

Depending on your business category, you might find that you can get to page one after only one or two reviews. If you own a restaurant, bar, or nightclub, you will require many reviews (perhaps several hundred.) However, even this is possible. One idea is to use email marketing to get your loyal customers to do reviews on Google. You could even offer an incentive of some kind, but be careful to remain ethical.

Warning: Do not “fake” your reviews.

Do not fill them out yourself, and do not get your employees to do it, or any other crazy scheme you might hatch.

Reason? This will backfire on you. It will be obvious, and you also might find that your account could get shut down for trying to manipulate the system.

Ask for reviews, but keep it honest and ethical. Do all these things and you’ll go far.

Results can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks or even months.

Happy optimizing, and happy Marketing Nashville!

I recently attended a local association event with a semi-prestigious speaker. The topic? Social media.

Most business owners do not live in the “social media” world 24/7 like I do. I assume that’s why the speaker focused almost all his time on selling the audience on the fact that social media is here to stay.

Well, sure. It’s here to stay. One story alone, combined with common sense, can convey that fact quickly and easily.

There’s no social media bubble. The reason? Because social media is simply a faster and easier way for people to build and grow relationships. Nothing will ever stop people from connecting…that’s what we humans do.

So if a technology makes connecting easier, then it is here to stay until something better, faster, and easier comes along.

Here’s the problem: How does a very busy local business owner use social media in a practical way?

No real brick-and-mortar business owner I know has the time to spend toiling away on Twitter. And a guy can’t hire it out, because it’s all based on “authenticity,” right? Subcontracting your online presence is the fast track to failure and high overhead.

So, let’s take a real world example:

What would a social media expert recommend to a busy guy who owns a plumbing business, for example? Something reasonable and doable. Let’s say no more than 30 minutes per day of his time, and no outsourcing.

I’m going to interview a few experts to answer this question for us. It’s a tough one. And the answer has to be more specific than, “BUILD RELATIONSHIPS!”

Check back here to see the results I dig up.

Until then, you can check out my report on How to Dominate the Internet Marketplace in Your Industry here.

If you’ve ever asked yourself…

“How can I use online tools to grow my business, and really get seen for what I do?”

…then you are not alone.

People ask me that question all the time. This report is designed to answer the question…

It doesn’t matter if you’re a wedding planner, a general contractor, an accountant, a chiropractor, a freelance designer, a musician, or a retail store owner…you too can dominate your market online, if you have the proper knowledge and tools.

I’m going to break this subject of “Online Domination” down into three categories: Getting visitors (Traffic), making sales and getting new clients (Conversion), and connecting with your visitor on a personal level (Connection.)

One Quick Cautionary Note:

Before we dive in, I always ask my new clients the following question:

Do you want to learn how to do it yourself? Or do you want someone to do all this stuff for you?

If your intention is to learn how to do it yourself, then keep reading.

However, if you want someone to do it for you, then make sure your chosen online marketing samurai is aware of the issues you’ll read about below.

Because let me warn you: many website designers aren’t.

I do this for a living, and I’ve seen first hand; it’s a rare bird in the “website creation” industry who understands how to effectively market a business.

So, please feel free to drop me an email if you have any trouble finding a top notch online marketer to get the job done for you.

You can find me here: http://www.MarketingNashville.com/services/

Otherwise, let’s keep going.

OK, let’s break it down….

1.Traffic

You know you need people to actually visit your website in order to make your website do what you want it to do, right? This is called traffic.

Without traffic, a website is just an expensive business card. You need to position yourself online in a way that maximizes traffic.

There are a number of effective ways to get traffic. There’s paid search, organic search engine traffic, links from other relevant websites, viral media (such as video,) offline advertising, email marketing, and much more.

Getting found on Google is the Big Kahuna of traffic sources.

The craft of positioning a website to “get found on Google” is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

This is one of the main ways I go about getting traffic for my clients, and you should consider SEO for your website. You can find out more about SEO just by browsing around a little on my website at http://www.MarketingNashville.com/services/

So, traffic is top priority. Are you with me so far? OK, good. Let’s move on to….

2.Conversion

Once you’re getting traffic, you know you want to convert those visitors to clients, customers, and sales.

You are probably aware that there are many powerful things you can do to a website to make it much more likely to convert.

You can easily crunch a few numbers and see how this works:

For every 100 visitors to your site, how many sales will you make if your conversion rate is 0%? Ha, ha. Yeah, zero, right? So, what about 1%? Yeah, that’s one sale. And that’s pretty decent for most websites.

But just imagine if you could get something like a 10%, 20%, or 30% conversion rate. Can you see the value in maximizing your conversion rate?

For example, how much is your average sale worth to you? Multiply that times 30. Now, what about the average lifetime value of a new client? See where we’re going with this?

Maximizing conversion can be extremely powerful. You can find more about ways to increase conversion at http://www.MarketingNashville.com/services/

Next, let’s talk about the “human” factor….

3.Connection

Online, the biggest obstacle you have to overcome is the lack of human connection.

The first thought in your visitor’s mind is, “OK, who is behind this site? Is it a real person, or a scam? What is this person like, and can I relate to her?”

Keep in mind, all this happens in a split second. Do you know what happens next? 99% of the time, they click away forever.

Unless you can make a connection within that time frame.

Then you have a chance of keeping that visitor around for a while with the intention of converting her into your newest client. Make sense?

I offer some great ways to make a connection over on my site at http://www.MarketingNashville.com/services/

As you can see, there is real power in dominating the internet marketplace for your industry.

Feel free to share this report with anyone you’d like. As long as you don’t edit or alter it in any way.

If you do that, I will sick a tribe of fierce, relentless, savage lawyers on you so fast you won’t remember your email password. Just kidding. But seriously, don’t alter it. Or I really will do that stuff.

How many social media accounts do you have? Next, how many of your accounts are you using to implement a disciplined social media marketing campaign?

My suggestion is, if your online accounts are not part of a focused and purposeful marketing strategy, you are burning daylight, my friend.

Take me, for example. Facebook, Myspace, and LinkedIn. In the past, Facebook and Myspace activity was high, and LinkedIn sat there unengaged.

The game plan:

Create a social media overall marketing strategy

Spend your time online working towards your marketing goals

Eliminate or neglect any and all social media accounts that don’t fit into your marketing strategy

Be ruthless with your stopwatch - don’t let yourself spend time on fruitless social media accounts

In hindsight, the first two were, in essence, places where discarded friends (and friends who had discarded me) floated back to the top of my attention. At least on-screen, anyway. Time well spent? I say, hell no.

And LinkedIn sat there… Unused, neglected, and misunderstood. Here’s the thing: Linked in is where the real action is. There is very little spamming, the information people post is usually quite accurate (due to the probability your old boss will find out) and people are there to do some real business networking.

If you are resourceful, you can get in front of The President of the Company…whereas before, you couldn’t even talk to his secretary!

If you are interested in dominating the internet marketplace in your industry, you’ve come to the right place.

Here is what you need to do to get started:

1. Do your market research. Online, this usually begins with keyword research to find the highest volume search terms for your market.

2. Focus on conversion. After finding online distribution channels that generate traffic and visitors, you must design your website to convert these visitors to clients, sales, or fans. Whatever your goal is, focus on getting your visitors to actually do what you want them to do. How do you do this?

3. Create a valuable offer. Discovering what you can offer that your target prospect will value is usually quite simple. You can simply ask them. Or survey them. Come up with three of your best ideas, and run it by a few trusted clients or customers. Then you have your offer.

4. Use a call to action. Online, you have to show your website guests what you want them to do next. This can be done without being salesy, but you must call your visitor to action in order to maximize conversion. Walk them down the path.

5. Make a connection. Website visitors are very skittish, and they will quickly click away forever if they don’t trust you. The fastest way to gain trust is to inject your personality into the top of every single page of your website. Say, “Hi, I’m Melvin, and this is my website.” Make a personal connection in order to increase response.

Online marketing get get you in deep, fast. It can also get you mired out on the flats at low tide.

Merlin Mann wrote this post called Better. Will you try to be better?

The bullets:

identify and destroy small-return bullshit;

shut off anything that’s noisier than it is useful;

make brutally fast decisions about what I don’t need to be doing;

avoid anything that feels like fake sincerity (esp. where it may touch money);

demand personal focus on making good things;

put a handful of real people near the center of everything.

Hey Merlin, do you have a LinkedIn account? “Hell no,” he says.

Well, I do have a LinkedIn account and it works well for me.

But the point is this: Stop wasting time. Ask yourself if something will provide returns. If not, quit doing it.

If you don’t go into your online marketing pursuits with this mindset, you will end up trapped in the fireswamp. No way out; except it’s 15% interesting, so you just keep wandering….

Wander not, grasshopper. Focus your online marketing energies, and it will pay off for your business.
